How To Get Your Finances In Order As A New Graduate With Ola Majekodunmi

How to get your finances in order as a new graduate with Ola Majekodunmi

Another year, means another cohort of students graduating from university. If you have just finished uni, then firstly I just want to say a huge congratulations for finishing your studies, especially in the midst of a global pandemic! However, now that you have just finished uni, you are now an honorary member of the adulting world. I’m not sure about you but, post-uni life can often feel like a very daunting place as we are left to navigate the adulting world ourselves, despite being taught very little about how to manage our finances effectively at school. Because of this, I am here to share a few of my top tips to help you get your finances in order as a new graduate!

1. SWITCH TO A GRADUATE BANK ACCOUNT

This tip is crucial, especially if you have enjoyed the perks of having a student bank account! You may be wondering what the benefit of having a graduate bank account is; but, having a graduate bank account enables you to carry on enjoying your interest-free overdraft facility (should you ever need to use it!) However, before you switch, it is important to check whether or not your current bank account has already switched you over to a graduate account as some banks may do this for you automatically. If this is the case, it’s still important to shop around as you may be able to find a better offer! Here are some of the best graduate accounts currently on the market.

2. CREATE A REALISTIC BUDGET

Some of you may be unemployed, or some of you may be entering graduate life with a full-time job. Either way, it’s important to set yourself a realistic budget to reduce your chances of overspending. (It’s even more crucial now that we have bars, pubs and restaurants to enjoy!) If you’re not quite sure how to go about setting yourself a budget, then here are some tips to help you out! If you’re currently unemployed and worried about your financial situation, then you may be eligible for universal credit. Take a look here to see how you can apply!

3. START BUILDING A POT OF SAVINGS

Trying to save at uni can often be a challenge. However, now that you are fresh out of uni with some of you about to earn a full-time salary, it’s important to start building a pot of savings. Whether this pot of savings is for a new car, house, or holiday, it’s important to have a pot of savings you can dip into for big purchases, or in the event of an emergency!

4. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF DISCOUNT CODES & EXCLUSIVE OFFERS

Just because you are no longer a student, it doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to fabulous discounts! Discount apps such as GRADLiFE and google browser extensions such as Honey enable you to take advantage of exclusive offers and discount codes- still allowing you to save some extra cash wherever possible.

5. MAKE SURE YOU ENJOY GRADUATE LIFE TOO!

Although it is important to get your finances in order now that you are free from university life, it is also just as important to make sure you enjoy graduate life the best you can too!

Hopefully, these simple but effective tips will be able to help you get your finances in order ahead of your post-uni journey!
