Top Ten Tips for surviving Fresher’s Week

It’s nearly time to welcome the student lifestyle and we know how daunting this can be! Whether you’re commuting to Uni from home or moving to the other side of the country, we’re not going to lie that fresher’s week will be one of the most stressful yet exciting weeks of your life! So, you’ll be happy to know we’ve lovingly put together some top tips to help you along the way!

Prep packing!

There are certain things you will look back and wish you had when you moved into your new flat that can make all the difference in your first week.

  1. Doorstop- small but effective

I know, this sounds simple but when you’re moving in it will make the meeting of your new flat mates so much smoother, avoiding any of that awkward knocking.

  1. Costumes galore!

Whether it’s an old feather bower you’ve had for years or a hula outfit, Fresher’s week is packed with fancy dress events so you’ll find the use, if not then society social nights (we’ll get to later) follow this theme so you’ll be sure to use it sooner or later!

  1. Drink!

Most of your days will be spent recovering from the night before and dragging yourself to any induction lectures you may have, so any drink you already have will become a godsend to avoid those last-minute runs to the corner shop.

Meeting your Uni BFF

You’ll soon come to realize first impressions count and the people you meet (or don’t meet) on those first few days can make or break your Uni experience.

  1. Facebook is your friend!

Start the hunt for your new BFF now by joining halls and course Facebook groups, many people will have been talking over summer. If you haven’t, don’t fear it’s never too late! Everyone’s in the same boat so if you find yourself with no one to go out with one night, just be brave and write a post!

  1. Put yourself out there!

It’s important to remember you’re not alone! Uni is the perfect test to finally put that fear aside and be brave. Ask questions, make those friendship bonds and say YES!

  1. Societies!

Not only are societies a great way of meeting like-minded people, they also offer the best nights out. Most societies do a social night once a week which normally has some sort of fancy dress theme! It is the perfect way to let your hair down after a day full of lectures!

Surviving your first lecture

It’s likely you’re first lecture is going to fall the day after the one fresher’s event you just can’t miss, so prepare for the worst!

  1. Coffee is key!

Coffee, pro plus and any other caffeine based product will become a life saver in your first few weeks so it’s important to stock up. Travel cups for those 9am’s are also a great idea!

  1. Come prepared!

No one wants to be the first person to get picked on by the grumpy professor so there’s certain things you can do to ensure you fly under the radar. There’s nothing worse than walking into a full lecture theatre whilst the professor stops to tut, so it’s best to arrive on time to avoid any awkward encounters. On this note, ensure phone is on silent!

Fresher’s FLU

So you’re 5 nights into fresher’s week and there’s still more to come when fresher’s FLU hits…
