Micronutrient. A word I’m sure you’ve all heard, banded around alongside words like supplementation, macronutrient and deficiency. But what does this term actually mean?! Well, put simply it’s a nutrient needed in small quantities. It’s an umbrella term used to describe vitamins and minerals that are just as, if not more important as the more commonly talked about, fats, carbohydrates and proteins. Here at Protein World, the majority of our customer base are women, so we are here to give some top tips direct to you ladies!

 

For the most part, humans cannot produce vitamins and minerals so they need to be obtained from the diet; the easiest way to achieve this is a colourful, healthy balanced diet.*

Key micronutrients for women include:

Iron: needed for growth and cell & brain development

Folate: helps tissues grow and cell function – essential when trying to get pregnant/ are pregnant

Calcium: essential in building strong teeth and bones & muscle contraction

Vitamin D: aids the absorption of calcium, helping maintenance of bone strength = this has been deemed a necessary supplement in recent times due to the COVID 19 pandemic as many people are outside less and not getting enough vitamin D from the sun

Magnesium: supports immune system and adjusts blood glucose levels

Vitamin B12: contributes to normal function of the brain and nervous system as well as energy production

 

So what foods should I include you ask? Superfoods include but are not limited to:

Kale, celery, cucumber, lentils, spinach, nuts, fortified products
